Reflexivity, Functional Reference, and Modularity: Alternative Targets for Language Origins

نویسندگان

چکیده

Researchers in language origins typically try to explain how compositional communication might evolve bridge the gap between animal and natural language. However, as an explanatory target, compositionality has been shown be problematic for a gradualist approach evolution of In this paper, I suggest that reflexivity provides apt plausible alternative target which does not succumb problems faces. further proto-reflexivity, depends upon functional reference, gives rise complex systems via modular composition.

The evolutionary origins of modularity

A central biological question is how natural organisms are so evolvable (capable of quickly adapting to new environments). A key driver of evolvability is the widespread modularity of biological networks--their organization as functional, sparsely connected subunits--but there is no consensus regarding why modularity itself evolved. Although most hypotheses assume indirect selection for evolvab...

Modularity of Mind and Language

The concept of Modularity, i.e., the degree to which the lexicon, syntax, and other neurocognitive domains operate independently of one another, has played an important role in theorizing about brain architecture and function, both in development and in adulthood. In this chapter, we present an overview of the theoretical and empirical arguments relevant to three parameters of modularity: local...

Structural Reflexivity and the Paradoxes of Self-Reference

Many logicians now think that in order to give a uniform solution to the paradoxes of self-reference one must revise logic by dropping one of the usual structural rules. To date almost all such approaches have focused on dropping structural transitivity or structural contraction, and have largely overlooked or ignored the prospects for resolving the paradoxes by dropping structural reflexivity....

Metasignaling and Language Origins

Over the past two decades, comparative linguistic anthropological research has disclosed the significance of metadiscourse and metasignaling for the establishment, maintenance, and transformation of social relations. One type of metasignal-signal relationship has, because of its role in producing sociability, come to seem especially interesting with regard to the evolutionary origins of human l...
